Bariatric Medicine

Bariatric medicine prescriptions in Hicksville, NY

Before and after weight-loss surgery, your medication list can change quickly. We fill prescriptions from bariatric surgeons and obesity medicine clinicians, help your care team find forms that are easier to take after surgery, and work with your prescriber’s office on coverage for weight-management therapy.

Coverage and prior authorization

Coverage for weight-management medications varies widely, and many plans require a prior authorization with BMI, related conditions and a record of supervised diet programs. Vitamins and supplements are often not covered as prescriptions. We run a test claim, tell your prescriber’s office what the plan needs, and tell you the cost before filling.

After some bariatric procedures, extended-release and large tablets may not be absorbed or tolerated well. Ask our pharmacists to review your list and share options, such as liquid or chewable forms, with your surgeon’s office.

Questions

Will my plan cover bariatric vitamins?

Many plans treat vitamins as over-the-counter products and don’t cover them. We can compare cash prices for different options and tell you which ones your plan does cover.

Should my medications change after surgery?

Your surgeon or prescriber decides. Our pharmacists can review your current list and flag extended-release or large tablets so you can ask your care team about alternatives.

Working with your prescriber

How we work with your bariatric medicine office

  1. We read the rejection

We find out why the plan didn’t pay: a prior authorization, step therapy, a quantity limit or a drug that isn’t on the formulary.

  2. We send the plan’s criteria

Your prescriber decides whether to submit a request and provides the clinical information the plan asks for.

  3. We follow it through

We check the status with your plan and keep you updated until there’s a decision.

  4. We fill and deliver

Once it’s approved, we fill your prescription and deliver it, or have it ready for pickup in Hicksville.
