Coverage and prior authorization

Hepatitis C antivirals and some liver disease therapies require a prior authorization, often with viral load, genotype or fibrosis results. Rifaximin and newer therapies for fatty liver disease may need one too. We tell your hepatologist’s office what the plan needs and, for eligible patients, share manufacturer and assistance-program options.

Some liver disease therapies are limited-distribution. If yours is, we’ll tell you and help route the prescription. Ask before taking over-the-counter pain relievers or supplements, since some can affect the liver.

Questions

How long does a hepatitis C prior authorization take?

It varies by plan. Many plans decide within a few business days once they have the lab results they ask for. We follow the request and tell you as soon as the plan decides.

Can I take over-the-counter pain relievers with liver disease?

Ask your hepatologist first. Our pharmacists can review the over-the-counter products you use and flag ingredients your doctor may want you to limit or avoid.

Working with your prescriber

How we work with your hepatology office

  1. We read the rejection

We find out why the plan didn’t pay: a prior authorization, step therapy, a quantity limit or a drug that isn’t on the formulary.

  2. We send the plan’s criteria

Your prescriber decides whether to submit a request and provides the clinical information the plan asks for.

  3. We follow it through

We check the status with your plan and keep you updated until there’s a decision.

  4. We fill and deliver

Once it’s approved, we fill your prescription and deliver it, or have it ready for pickup in Hicksville.
