Coverage and prior authorization

Most plans cover FDA-approved contraception with no copay under federal and New York rules, though a plan may cover only certain products in each category. Brand prenatal vitamins and some hormone therapies may not be covered. We check your benefit, tell your prescriber’s office about covered alternatives or what an exception requires, and tell you the cost first.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Tell us. Our pharmacists will keep it in mind when reviewing new prescriptions and over-the-counter products, and refer questions to your prescriber.

Questions

Can I get a full year of birth control at once?

Often, yes. New York requires many plans to cover a 12-month supply of hormonal contraception. Your prescription needs to be written for it, and we’ll check your plan before filling.

Is emergency contraception available without a prescription?

Some emergency contraception is sold over the counter with no age restriction. Other types need a prescription. Ask our pharmacists and we’ll explain the options and costs.

Working with your prescriber

How we work with your gynecology & obstetrics office

  1. We read the rejection

We find out why the plan didn’t pay: a prior authorization, step therapy, a quantity limit or a drug that isn’t on the formulary.

  2. We send the plan’s criteria

Your prescriber decides whether to submit a request and provides the clinical information the plan asks for.

  3. We follow it through

We check the status with your plan and keep you updated until there’s a decision.

  4. We fill and deliver

Once it’s approved, we fill your prescription and deliver it, or have it ready for pickup in Hicksville.
