Palliative Care

Palliative care prescriptions in Hicksville, NY

Palliative care focuses on comfort and quality of life, and families shouldn’t have to chase prescriptions. We fill prescriptions from palliative care and hospice teams, coordinate with them on changes, and deliver free to the patient’s home.

Coverage and prior authorization

If the patient is enrolled in hospice, medications related to the hospice diagnosis are generally covered by the hospice benefit, often through a pharmacy the hospice chooses. Other medications are billed to the patient’s prescription plan, which may require a prior authorization or set quantity limits. We check which benefit applies and coordinate with the care team before filling.

Controlled medications must be e-prescribed under New York’s I-STOP law, with limited exceptions, and some deliveries need a signature. Ask our pharmacists about safe storage at home and how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed.

Questions

The care team changed a dose. What happens to the old supply?

We fill the new prescription and can explain how to set aside or dispose of medication that’s no longer needed, including controlled medications.

Swallowing tablets is getting hard. Are there other forms?

Many medications come as liquids, dissolving tablets or other forms. Ask the care team, and we’ll tell them what’s available and covered.

Working with your prescriber

How we work with your palliative care office

  1. We read the rejection

We find out why the plan didn’t pay: a prior authorization, step therapy, a quantity limit or a drug that isn’t on the formulary.

  2. We send the plan’s criteria

Your prescriber decides whether to submit a request and provides the clinical information the plan asks for.

  3. We follow it through

We check the status with your plan and keep you updated until there’s a decision.

  4. We fill and deliver

Once it’s approved, we fill your prescription and deliver it, or have it ready for pickup in Hicksville.
